PS2 (Slimline) (2004)
The Slimline PS2 was a major hardware revision of the PlayStation 2 and made the console much smaller than the original PS2 design. It is smaller, thinner and quieter than older models of the PS2 and includes a built in Ethernet port for access to the PlayStation Network service used for the PS2’s online gaming. Due to the console being much thinner it does not have the 3.5 inch expansion bay of older models and therefore cannot use the hard drive accessory for the older PS2. The power supply is also no longer housed in the unit and is now an external power brick. Due to the lack of hard disk support the slimline PS2 can’t play Final Fantasy XI or the Official Sony Linux Kit due to both of them requiring the expansion bays hard drive support to run. Also since the unit is smaller the slimline PS2 requires a new type of multitap to use up to 8 controllers. Currently the new multitap is the only one sold in shops. The slimline PS2 also features a flip top lid instead of the standard disc tray used on older models.
