PSP (PlayStation Portable) (2005)
The PSP is a portable PlayStation that uses the UMD (Universal Media Disc) as its game format. The PSP has a nice big screen and very impressive graphics. The PSP is also the first handheld system to use an optical disc for its game format. The PSP uses Sonys XMB (XrossMediaBar) menu system also found on the PlayStation 3 as its main menu system. It also has very good multimedia capabilities and a built in web browser. The PSP also features a Sony Memory Stick Duo slot for use as the consoles storage. This can be used for storing game saves, music, videos and other content for use through the PSP system. The PSP can also connect with a PS3 system through the Remote Play feature. Remote Play allows features of the PS3 to be used on the PSP through a network with both a PS3 and a PSP. The PSP has a reflashable firmware system in which users can download software updates from Sony to improve the functionality of the PSP System. In an update sometime in 2008 users got the Skype messaging software loaded onto their PSP systems through a firmware update. This is an example of what features can be added to the PSP system through simple firmware updates. The PSPs controls are very similar to a standard PlayStation controller. There is one thumb operated joystick, two shoulder buttons, a d-pad and the PlayStation standard X,O, triangle and square buttons. The PSP is a very good handheld console but has been heavily outsold by its main rival, the Nintendo DS.
